Russia continues to go in a downward spiral with more limits proposed on ‘gay propaganda’ and Pennsylvania gets first Out Gay lawmaker (and he’s smoking hot!) Civil-unions law passes Colorado Senate, and “Ex-Gay” Researcher apologizes. Lots of good discussion, lots of good debate, so don’t miss This Week in Gay.

Flash forward to 2007 (I think) I met Shawn and his pet bird Rudy. Rudy was a chattering red-headed Lori. He had a vocabulary more impressive than our previous Presidents and could mimic the sounds of a door opening, water gurgling, or his infamous security alarm. When I first met Shawn Rudy’s life was delegated to a walk in closet with a huge cage, lots of toys and lots of sheets to protect the clothes he would otherwise be *ahem* projecting on. Lories have to have a very special diet since their systems can’t digest stuff like pellets and seeds. This made for a tedious cleanup every weekend as Rudy would make a mess of his cage.

Shawn moved in I believe in 2008 and Rudy as well. Rudy immediately became king bird of the house and even as we got other birds he would remain the cornerstone of what is now considered the ‘bird room’. When I would walk through the door at the end of the day he would greet me with a happy ‘WHEEEEE’ of excitement that I was home. He would ask if he could ‘go-outside’ or ‘let me out’ of his cage. His favorite toy was a measuring cup with he loved to wrestle with and would throw numerous times to play reverse fetch. He would constantly asked for ‘a shower’ or ‘juice’, and would love to play ‘peek-a-boo’ or a game similar to simon/memory where he would change up the amount of times he sang a note that you had to match. If he was angry he would go ‘shame on you’ but if he really wanted attention he would say ‘sweetie come here’ or ‘come here babe’.

He not only said many phrases but would say them in different voices. Occasionally he would belt out ‘good girl’ in a voice so different it would send chills up your spine. He also did a whispering voice that sounded like someone saying ‘who is it!?’ in the middle of the night. We’re not sure what his previous home-life was life, but he picked up a LOT from his previous owners. Occasionally he would have nightmares too which I would go into his room and repeat his famous lines of ‘it’s okay’ and ‘who’s a good bird’,’night bird’.

He would also know where you were in the house. Thanks to the creaking floorboards in my house, if I walked upstairs he would instantly call out to us. If I went into the room at night to check the doors he would make a gurgling sound before I left. If you were in the house he knew it, and the weekends were constantly full of him talking up a storm. When he first moved in it drove me nuts because the quiet house I was used to was constantly being interrupted. Over time I got use to this till he was nothing more than background noise. Now I would give my life to hear it again if I could.

I would give anything just to be able to hold him once again, pet him and tell him to ‘stop trying to masturbate’ (yes he said that too), Or just peer into his cage and have him turn his head and look at me and say ‘what ya doing?’. I was just getting to some breakthrough points with him, teaching him  how to say ‘brrrr’ when I blew on him or getting him to sing with me in unison. He was the most amazing pet I’ve ever had the joy of owning, and now sadly he is gone. My world is quieter and emptier and I simply don’t know what to do.

I came down to the bird room Tuesday to go out for my usual run. I had just let them out when I came home and Rudy was hunched over his cage door kinda weird. He wasn’t saying anything. At first I thought his wing was stuck or something but when I picked him up, I could tell he was paralyzed. We rushed him to the emergency room. Shawn figured he was experiencing a diabetic coma due to the different food we gave him in the morning. When the blood work came back the Vet thought he was exposed to some sort of Lead or Zinc poisoning. His sugar was fine but he was anemic, a ‘drunken sailor’ as the vet put it. They put him in an incubator with oxygen and he seemed to be a bit better, but was still extremely dizzy. The vet started treatment for him. He died sometime after 1:30am in the morning.

Many years ago my dog Shadow died when I was at college. That was the worst day of my life till now. I’ve never experienced this much pain ever in my lifetime. Even though all my logic tells me we did everything we could, we gave him the best life possible, I gave him the most amount time I could, and he’s is no longer in pain, I am still angry and saddened by the complexity of death.

Now the house is a bit quieter. Noises that use to be there are no longer and it’s a continued reminder of the hole in our lives. While most of my friends would always consider him just ‘a bird’, Rudy was my child, my little baby that brought so much joy into my life and taught me how to love again. Animals give you undenying love, even when he would occasionally bite me he would turn around and ask for ‘juice’ and I would laugh and cry at how quickly he would go back to asking for attention. My only regret is that I never made enough money in my lifetime that I could spend more time with him. I wished I could be a stay-home dad with give him to give him the constant attention he craved.

While birds may not be as huggable at dogs or cats, and sometimes you can’t hold them in your arms for fear of a nip. When I would get Rudy onto my glove and was putting him to bed and he would say ‘That’s a good bird’, I would pet him and repeat the phrase. He would try to get me to give me a shower before I turned off the lights or try any other tricks to get me to stick around before I put the cover on his cage. Sometimes he would take a while to get into his cage for bed, but every morning there he would be, bright eyed and red tailed looking for his food and his ‘shower’. He wasn’t a huggable animal but when I could pet him, it was the happiest moment in my life.

I will remember this little stranger that came into our lives. For almost four years I knew this small creature and even through all the emotions he gave us, he was the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me. Goodbye my dear Rudy, you will always be loved and the memories and joy you gave us in our little home will last for all of our lives.

“Night bird”

My Apple IIe was our first family computer. My school had Texas Instruments and TRS-80’s, but the Apple IIe was my first real love. I had that machine for seven years until the ‘T’ key simple would not type anymore. I begged and pleaded my parents for a new Macintosh and finally they used that thing that my Dad never used called a ‘credit-card’ to buy us one.

I had seen IBM machines and thought not only were the machines ugly, but the interface was horrendous! What was all this text you saw when the machine started up? What did you ever need to know that? My Apple IIe was the simplest and the most FUN computer I ever owned. You just turned on the machine and it worked beautifully and it NEVER crashed!

So we bought our first Macintosh one week before I went to college. It was a Performa which I insisted on getting because you could put an Apple IIe card inside of it and run Apple IIe software on it in emulation mode. The very next week came a BIG announcement on the front page of the Cleveland Plain Dealer ‘MICROSOFT GIVES APPLE XX BILLION’. My dad threw this in my face as he felt that he had just purchased a piece of crap and his investment had just been shot in the foot. I responded passionately ‘You just wait Dad, one day Apple will be kicking Microsoft’s butt! You just wait!’

I can’t tell you how many times I had arguments with individuals over which was the better system, Apple or Microsoft. Besides having to listen to numerous butt-jokes and comments like ‘Apple is on its final legs’ I had to actually educate people on graphic interface design, and even what Photoshop was! It amazed me how everyone would settle for less just to play a video game. While I enjoyed a video game now-and-then I was more of a creator. I preferred making a website over playing Quake (Although stringing an Apple talk cable across my apartment to my neighbor Jason’s just to play multi-person Quake was a thrill of a lifetime).

Needless to say, Apple was slowly rebounding and other people couldn’t see it, nor did they want to. What really got my aggravated is that I didn’t care about multi-threaded multitasking, or even the fact that occasionally, for no reason the whole system would lock up under MacOS 9. I knew why Apple was better. It had a better user-interface, it was more intuitive to a person who was educated and/or artistic and it just looked better! I also felt buying Windows was buying a generic form of a product. Like when you buy that store-brand pop and then realize that it isn’t really as good as Coke or Pepsi. It takes you less mouse clicks to get stuff done on a Mac and it’s for people who wanted to get stuff ‘done’, not people who wanted to be wastes of society.

So throughout the glorious nineties I stood fast to my belief that Apple was a better system, and this was even before the glorious days of MacOS X yet to come. Steve Jobs came back to Apple and I knew as every fan-boy did that he was going to turn it around. When the first iMac took off and all my college friends were buying it, I knew Apple was on the right path again. When I got my first G3, my first brand-spanking powerhouse, I was in love again. Still the nay-sayers would continue to mock Apple, make fun of their 2% market share all the while I would go-about explaining to them logic, reason, user-interface-design and of course telling them to ‘just wait.’

Time went on and I went through numerous Apple machines. My beige G3, my blue and white G3, my G4, my other G4, my G5, my iBook, and now my iMac(s). Now granted I had two machines at this point because quite simply I couldn’t get a job anywhere that allowed me to use a Mac, and at the time Windows 2000 really was a pretty decent system. It wasn’t until I got my first stand-alone iMac several years ago that I ditched the Windows machine all together. I didn’t need to have two systems anymore and if I did need a Windows machine, work would provide that for me. I could do everything and run everything on a Mac at home!

I also have had an iPod, an iPhone and now an iPad. In fact when I got my first iPhone and realized how cool it was to be the first kid on the block with the device everyone wanted to see I came to the realization that not only had Apple finally turned everything around but also that I was right so many years ago! All those years of listening to people who only wanted to put me down, for no other reason that they simply didn’t want to deal with something or someone who was ‘different’; well.. I was suddenly vindicated. My instinct has proven me right!

And thus Apple is now the biggest most powerful company in the world. Steve Jobs proved to us that you could really follow your dream and make it happen. No matter what people say to you, how many times someone tells you are ‘wrong’ or a ‘moron’, if you truly believe in something then go for it. The biggest problem I have seen with society is that if you don’t conform to the norm, you get scrutinized. This has been my story since my youth and it even follows me to this day (although I much more mentally stable now to deal with ignorant assholes.)

And don’t get me started on how Android douche bags (not everyone is a douche) don’t see how they wouldn’t even have their Droid phone if Google didn’t steal the design from Apple. He we go again although this time with Steve Jobs stepping down as CEO, I don’t see Apple losing the race this time.

With Apple’s last earnings call I forwarded an email to my dad saying ‘See I told you, you should of listened to my younger 18-year-old self. Ha ha!”

And now at a job where not only do we have Macs, but people are clamoring for them in all work place environments (you can run Windows on them too), I can safety say that it’s been a long journey but I got to experience the ‘Second Coming of Jobs!’

So Thank You Steve Jobs. You saved us for mediocrity and you saved ME from the ‘stones and arrows’ of the bullies of the world. You gave us HOPE, you gave us DREAMS all the expense of having to work with people who stole your ideas and then claimed they invented them. You not only showed them that truth and vision wins out in the end, but if you do things the right way the ‘first time’ you get better results. So once again, Thank You Steve Jobs, for most of all, giving me my life and my inspiration that has gotten me to where I am today.

Richard Hayes Phillips has been the leading investigator of the
fraudulent 2004 presidential election in Ohio. His work was relied
upon by John Conyers in challenging the Ohio electors in Congress,
by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. in his article for Rolling Stone magazine,
and by Algenon L. Marbley in issuing his federal court order protecting
the ballots from destruction. Assisted by teams of volunteers equipped
with digital cameras, Phillips amassed some 30,000 images of forensic
evidence. Then he analyzed it all himself, examining 126,000 ballots,
127 poll books, and 141 voter signature books from 18 counties in Ohio.

Phillips’ long-awaited book, “Witness to a Crime: A Citizens’ Audit of
an American Election,” was published by Canterbury Press on April 12.
The book is 448 pages, with a hard cover and a dust jacket. The book
includes eight color plates, and a CD with 1200 digital images of actual
ballots, poll books, voter signature books, ballot accounting charts,
and other forensic evidence from the 2004 presidential election in Ohio.

The publication was financed with venture capital. There were no grants,
no subsidies, no bailouts. Phillips toured the country, giving more than
seventy presentations in sixteen states. There was no distributor, no
publicist, no booking agent, no travel agent. On Monday, October 20,
in St. Louis, Missouri, “Witness to a Crime” turned a profit.

WITNESS TO A CRIME : A CITIZENS’ AUDIT OF AN AMERICAN ELECTION

The 2004 presidential election in Ohio, the state that decided the election, was rigged.

Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D., began investigating the Ohio election when he received an unsolicited e-mail containing obviously erroneous election results from Cleveland. He quickly found that hundreds of votes in certain precincts had inexplicably shifted from John Kerry to other presidential candidates. This made him a witness to a crime, with a duty to investigate further and to present his findings publicly. The result is the book that you hold in your hands. It is an investigative report and eyewitness history, the document of record for what really happened in Ohio.

He began by analyzing election results at the precinct level. Assisted by a band of “spreadsheet angels” who compiled the data into tables and spreadsheets, Phillips wrote and submitted 21 papers to the Ohio Supreme Court as an expert witness in the Moss v. Bush lawsuit. He presented evidence of voter suppression, failure to count ballots cast, and alteration of the vote count sufficient to question the alleged victory of George W. Bush in Ohio.

He resumed his investigation as a cold case. He presented two new papers to the Election Assessment Hearing in Houston. He worked with Rolling Stone magazine on the landmark article by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., “Was the 2004 Election Stolen?” And he began submitting records requests to Boards of Elections in Ohio.

Assisted by teams of citizen volunteers equipped with digital cameras, Phillips amassed some 30,000 images of forensic evidence. Then he analyzed it all himself, examining 126,000 ballots, 127 poll books, and 141 voter signature books from 18 counties in Ohio. His preliminary findings, submitted to Federal Court in the King Lincoln v. Blackwell lawsuit, helped obtain a court order to protect the ballots from destruction. His ultimate findings are set forth in relentless detail in this book.

In the audited counties, three-fifths of the ballots punched for a liberal black woman for Chief Justice, and half of the ballots punched in favor of gay marriage, were also punched for Bush. Thousands of ballots in heavily Democratic precincts were pre-punched for third-party candidates. Voting machines were rigged, tabulators were rigged, ballot boxes were stuffed, ballots were altered, ballots were sorted according to candidate, and ballots were destroyed.

But don’t take his word for it. See for yourself. Included with this book is a CD with 1200 digital images of ballots, poll books, voter signature books, and other elections records, for all to see, and for none to deny. The evidence is in your hands.

Richard Hayes Phillips holds a B.A. in politics from the State University of New York at Potsdam, an M.A. in geography and an M.A. in history from the University of Oklahoma, and a Ph.D. in geomorphology from the University of Oregon. A former college professor, he has taught twelve different courses in geology, geography, and history. He has investigated the use of herbicides containing dioxin in New York, and groundwater hydrology at nuclear dump sites in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. He has written or co-authored more than a dozen geologic and hydrologic papers, in both English and Spanish, which he submitted to regulatory agencies. He has four times been recognized as an expert witness in state and federal proceedings, twice as a geologist, and twice as an election fraud investigator.

Evan Wolfson

Evan previously served as Associate Counsel to Lawrence Walsh in the Iran/Contra investigation, and as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn, New York. Between Yale College and Harvard Law School, Evan spent two years with the Peace Corps in West Africa.
